The only connection is that A, B and O are related. Since we are closely related to the other Great Apes, we have much the same blood types. I heard that all mammals share the ABO system so I guess it is uninteresting.
I've never done any reading on this but, from the article linked below, I would guess that the reason for greater diversity in human blood types is the fact that we've lived in a broader range of environments that expose us to more different viruses and bacteria, which seem to be the stimulus for the evolution of different blood types.
Blood type research is being done on great apes in zoos right now, but it is still ongoing. There is not enough data yet to answer your question. Stay posted!
